Tokyo autonäitusel esitleb Volkswagen ökonoomse rodsteri protoüüpi EcoRacer. Üliökonoomne EcoRacer kulutab 3,4 liitrit kütust saja kilomeetri peale ning maksimaalkiiruseks on autol 230 kilomeetrit tunnis. Süsinikkiu kasutamise tõttu on sportauto kaal kõigest 850 kg. Kiiruse 100 km/h saavutab EcoRacer 6,3 sekundiga. Autole on paigaldatud 1,5 liitrine turbodiisel võimsusega 100 KW (136 hj/4000 p/min). Vahemikus 1900-3750 pööret minutis tagab mootor väändemomendi üle 250 Nm. Surveaste- 17.2:1. Käigukastiks on automaatne DSG. EcoRacer kehastab endas ettekujutust kiirest ja ökonoomsest autost, olles üheaegselt nii kupee, rodster kui speedster. EcoRaceri pikkuseks on 3770 mm, laiuseks 1740 mm, kõrguseks 1210 mm, teljevahe on 2480 mm, esirataste rööbe on 1540 mm, tagarataste rööbe 1510 mm. VW disainerite arvates annavad prototüübi võimsust edasi õhuvõtuavad, väljatoodud rattakoopad ning 17 tollised kergsulamist veljed.
